This article considers a method for estimating the traffic volume indirectly without directlycounting the movements. The method is based on spatial microsimulation. Spatial microsimulationand demographic data are used for finding the movement counts and to model trafficrequirements for the road network.The developed method can be used to estimate the traffic volume on local roads which consist ofmajor part of Estonian road network. Estimating the traffic volume is necessary for assigning theroad maintenance levels in transportation and traffic studies and while planning for roadrenovations.
